Cam Johnson Out for Season

NFL: Preseason-Indianapolis Colts at New York Jets

One day after losing OLB Robert Mathis to a season-ending achilles tear, the Colts outside linebacking group just got even thinner, as Kevin Bowen of Colts.com announced that OLB Cam Johnson was placed on Injured Reserve, effectively ending his season. Johnson suffered an undisclosed elbow injury in Sunday night’s game, and now we know that the injury was more serious than previously speculated.

It’s of key significance because OLB Cam Johnson was the primary back-up behind Walden and Werner in Mathis’s absence. Without him, there’s unproven rookie OLB Jonathan Newsome, this year’s 5th round pick, and not much else.

Originally a 7th round pick of the 49ers in 2012 from Virginia, Johnson was acquired by the Colts in a trade in September of last year. In 12 games, he recorded 5 tackles for the Colts in 2013.
