The Colts announced today that they waived Running Back Dion Lewis and signed DT Kelcy Quarles. Undrafted out of South Carolina in this year’s draft, Quarles played this year’s preseason with the New York Giants before being waived as part of the final 53-man roster cuts. He was added on August 31st to the New England Patriots practice squad, where he was signed from today. He is the nephew of long-time Patriots’ tight end Ben Coates.
It’s a significant move because the Colts must expect DE Arthur Jones to be out a significant amount of time after he suffered a high ankle sprain in Monday Night’s game. RB Dion Lewis had just been signed a week ago today, and the Colts’ brass decided that 4 running backs was a luxury that could no longer be afforded given Jones’s injury.
Once Jones heals, it will be interesting to see whether the Colts eventually will look to re-add Lewis, who was signed to a 2-year deal, which I assume was originally intended to keep him here for the short-term future.
Also of news, the Colts signed OG David Arkin to the practice squad and waived OG Josh Walker.
