The Colts announced that they released RB Chris Rainey for violation of team rules this morning. A former 5th round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2012 out of Florida, Rainey had gotten a second chance with the Colts in 2013, after he was waived by the Steelers quickly following a battery charge in January of 2013.

Rainey signed with the Colts on November 20, 2013, but was promptly placed on IR on December 9, 2013, to clear roster space for a more natural running back. While with the Colts, he was utilized on special teams and appeared in 2 games as return man.

It’s unclear precisely what Rainey’s misconduct was with the team, but it’s a bonehead mistake for a player that may be running out of chances in the NFL. It looks even more puzzling, when you consider that with Ballard out for the season, the 3rd RB job was up for grabs. It’s now likely almost certainly Dan “Boom” Herron’s job to lose.
